To not much surprise, Tom Glavine declined his $13 MM player’s option
yesterday and picked up a $3 MM buyout in the process. This doesn’t mean he won’t be returning to the Mets, but I don’t see it happening. He says he needs more time to decide whether to retire or return for a 22nd season. Does anyone think he really wants to go back to Flushing after the Mets’ collapse and his performance in their final game?
Being the Braves fan that I am, I hope the Braves can bring him back to finish up his career where it started. The Mets would certainly have him back, but they’ll find other pitching options if he doesn’t go back.
I’ve heard the Washington rumor, but I can’t honestly think he’d want to finish up his career in a building project. He’s made it known that he wants another ring and his best shot at that would be in New York or Atlanta. I can’t see him playing for anyone else besides NY or Atlanta.
Regardless, I don’t see him retiring. I can’t see the final day on the diamond of his Hall of Fame career being forever associated with the Mets’ historic collapse in the 2007 season.
